1. Traffic congestion especially after 5:00 pm was creating a lot of air pollution and causing accidents.
2. The pavements were narrow, broken & encroached-upon.
3. Lack of parking facility, public wash rooms, parks, etc.
4. A few streetlights were broken.
5. The drained were overflowing, especially during heavy rains.
6. Heaps of garbage were found nearly everywhere.

The students took action against these problems:

1. They spoke to the Security Manager of a 4-Star hotel in the vicinity about placing dustbins and planting saplings along this road. He got the hotel to agree to sponsor this initiative.
2. They wrote to an organisation called “Saytrees” and requested them to provide saplings for them to plant.
3. They spoke to the Corporators of both the wards to which the road belongs for improving the road.
4. They lodged complaints on websites including www.ichangemycity.com and wrote to Deccan Herald (a leading newspaper in Bengaluru).
5. They held a cleanliness drive and met the Health Officer of Ward 6 and the Civil Engineer of BBMP. In fact, they even wrote to Reckitt Benckiser, the marketers of Dettol, requesting them to get involved in the sanitation drive.
6. They sent water samples to BS Analytical Testing Laboratory to check if the water was portable. Thankfully, it was found to be safe for consumption.
7. They held a medical camp at Umar Farooq Masjid in Sarapalya. About 300 people underwent check-ups. Medicines & toothpastes were distributed free.

A group of 13 Bala Janaagraha children studying in Class 8 of Elite Educational Trust organised a free Medical camp on 14th December 2015 and conducted several awareness programs mainly to spread civic sense in the residents of Neelsandra. The camp was attended by 150 people and was highly appreciated. To conduct the camp and the various awareness programs, the students coordinated with the Councillor, Zonal Commissioner, Govt. officials, Vasan Eye Care (a private chain of eye clinics), bike ambulance, the Police and Janaagraha. For the first time in the history of the area, the elected representatives, Govt. officials, NGO, private organisations private organisations and education institutions joined hands to spread civic awareness.

Further, they advised people about the harmful effects of plastics and encouraged them to buy eco-friendly bags.

The excellent work done by the children earned them accolades from a number of people. Also, their project was selected for the Zonal level competition of the National Civic Fest conducted by Bala Janaagraha.
